Student Support for Remote Learning

Your guide and resource for everything you need to prepare for and conquer remote learning.

What is "Remote Learning"?

Remote learning means that all course instruction and class time is delivered online via Blackboard and other online/technology-supported tools.  Teaching and learning takes place without faculty and students gathering together in the same geographic or physical location.

  • It may include asynchronous and/or synchronous faculty-to-student engagement.
  • The goal should be to support active learning and meaningful engagement while leveraging similar activities that align with the College’s learning outcomes.

Mobile Apps to Scan Documents & Create PDFs

Adobe Scan

The free Adobe Scan PDF scanner app turns your device into a powerful portable PDF scanner that recognizes text automatically (OCR). More than just a PDF scanner. Use this mobile document scanner to turn anything — receipts, notes, documents, photos, business cards, whiteboards — into an Adobe PDF with text you can reuse from each PDF and photo scan.

Microsoft Lens

Office Lens is like having a scanner in your pocket. Like magic, it will digitize notes on whiteboards or blackboards. Always find important documents or business cards. Sketch your ideas and snap a picture for later. Don't lose receipts or stray sticky notes again!

Evernote

Evernote helps you focus on what matters most and have access to your information when you need it. Input typed notes or scan handwritten notes. Add to-do’s, photos, images, web pages, or audio ... and it’s all instantly searchable. Organize notes any way you want and share with anyone. And Evernote syncs across your devices so your information is always with you, everywhere you go.

Capture and Scan a PDF with your Notes app (iPhone users only):

  • Go to “notes”
  • Press on the camera button.
  • It will ask if you want to scan a document.
  • Lay out the pages you want to scan
  • It will save them all as a PDF file

Off-Campus Access to Online Resources

All students can access library resources and services with their user ID.

  • Your LINCCWeb Borrower ID is your MDC student number.
  • Your PIN (unless you change it) is the last 4 digits of your MDC student number.

Respondus Lockdown Browser

What is Respondus Lockdown Browser?

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system (Blackboard). It locks down student computers to prevent cheating during exams.

LockDown Browser Requirement

  • This course requires the use of LockDown Browser for online exams. Watch this video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser.

Download Instructions

Once Installed:

  • Start LockDown Browser
  • Log into Blackboard Learn
  • Navigate to the test

Note: You won't be able to access tests with a standard web browser. If this is tried, an error message will indicate that the test requires the use of LockDown Browser. Simply start LockDown Browser and navigate back to the exam to continue.

Guidelines
When taking an online test, follow these guidelines:

  • Select a location where you won't be interrupted.
  • Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and also that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it.
  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc. and don't have them within reach.
  • Clear your area of all external materials - books, papers, other computers, or devices.
  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.

Getting Help
Several resources are available if you encounter problems with LockDown Browser:

  • The Windows and Mac versions of LockDown Browser have a "Help Center" button located on the toolbar. Use the "System & Network Check" to troubleshoot issues. If an exam requires you to use a webcam, also run the "Webcam Check" from this area.
  • Respondus has a Knowledge Base available from support.respondus.com. Select the "Knowledge Base" link and then select "Respondus LockDown Browser" as the product. If your problem is with a webcam, select "Respondus Monitor" as your product.
  • If you're still unable to resolve a technical issue with LockDown Browser, go to support.respondus.com and select "Submit a Ticket". Provide detailed information about your problem and what steps you took to resolve it.
