What is "Remote Learning"?

Remote learning means that all course instruction and class time is delivered online via Blackboard and other online/technology-supported tools.  Teaching and learning takes place without faculty and students gathering together in the same geographic or physical location.

  • It may include asynchronous and/or synchronous faculty-to-student engagement.
  • The goal should be to support active learning and meaningful engagement while leveraging similar activities that align with the College’s learning outcomes.

Reliable Internet Service — FREE Temporary Services Available!

If you don’t have access to Internet at home, Comcast and Charter/Spectrum are offering 60-days of free Internet services to college students. See below for information:

  • FCC agreement stating that providers will waive late fees, not cutoff service for lack of payment, and open hot-spots.
  • Comcast COVID-19 response: offers free WiFi for 2 months to low income families plus all Xfinity hot-spots are free to the public during this time
  • Charter Free Internet offer for 2 months
  • AT&T COVID-19 response: offers open hot-spots, unlimited data to existing customers, and $10/month plans to low income families

Respondus Lockdown Browser

What is Respondus Lockdown Browser?

LockDown Browser is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment within a learning management system (Blackboard). It locks down student computers to prevent cheating during exams.

  • This course requires the use of LockDown Browser for online exams. Watch this video to get a basic understanding of LockDown Browser.

Download Instructions

Once Installed:

  • Start LockDown Browser
  • Log into Blackboard Learn
  • Navigate to the test

Note: You won't be able to access tests with a standard web browser. If this is tried, an error message will indicate that the test requires the use of LockDown Browser. Simply start LockDown Browser and navigate back to the exam to continue.

When taking an online test, follow these guidelines:

  • Select a location where you won't be interrupted.
  • Before starting the test, know how much time is available for it, and also that you've allotted sufficient time to complete it.
  • Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc. and don't have them within reach.
  • Clear your area of all external materials - books, papers, other computers, or devices.
  • Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test.
  • LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted.

Getting Help
Several resources are available if you encounter problems with LockDown Browser:

  • The Windows and Mac versions of LockDown Browser have a "Help Center" button located on the toolbar. Use the "System & Network Check" to troubleshoot issues. If an exam requires you to use a webcam, also run the "Webcam Check" from this area.
  • Respondus has a Knowledge Base available from Select the "Knowledge Base" link and then select "Respondus LockDown Browser" as the product. If your problem is with a webcam, select "Respondus Monitor" as your product.
  • If you're still unable to resolve a technical issue with LockDown Browser, go to and select "Submit a Ticket". Provide detailed information about your problem and what steps you took to resolve it.

Cambridge Cambridge is providing free access to many online materials in their catalog.
Cengage Cengage is providing free access to Cengage Unlimited through the end of the current academic term for US students attending colleges affected by COVID-19. This includes the entire Cengage catalog of eBooks, online courseware, study tools, and more.
Lumen Learning Lumen Learning is offering support for a mid-term transition to Lumen Courseware at no cost.
McGraw Hill McGraw Hill is providing free access, training and support for our McGraw-Hill Connect and ALEKS digital learning platforms to instructors and students who need to urgently move to an online format for their Spring 2020 courses.
Miami Dade Public Library System The Miami Dade Public Library System always offers free access to learning materials and services, including, and Gale Cengage Learning. Note: A library card may be required for access to these materials and services.
OpenStax OpenStax materials are always offered free of charge and under an open license. Check out their support website for moving your course online using their materials.
Pearson Pearson is offering several ways to ensure students can access materials at no additional cost for the remainder of the term.
VitalSource Students and instructors at impacted 2 and 4-year non-profit institutions in the U.S. and Canada can now access a catalog of etexts, through May 25, 2020 in the US and April 30, 2020 in Canada, at no charge.

iClicker’s online student engagement solution is free of charge for students whose instructors are moving their courses online in response to COVID-19.


For schools impacted by COVID-19 closures who do not already have a SmartMusic subscription, we are offering free access through June 30, 2020. Please contact us and let us know your needs.
