Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Symposium | Fall 2020

Abstract

Graffiti and Street Art, once considered vandalism, has become a means through which many people approach art. Much of the art in Wynwood tackles important issues through paint, spray cans, and tags on walls of apartments, businesses, and abandoned factories. The aesthetic appeal of Wynwood has been beneficial for local businesses and artists, but the neighborhood has had its share of poverty, gentrification, and re-development throughout its journey to becoming Miami’s “Mecca” of Street Art. Wynwood: World of Street Art will be a multimedia project that will educate individuals about the neighborhood’s street art, history, and social issues its residents face. We want people to appreciate the meaning behind the artwork and recognize the importance of this cultural hub.
