Kendall Learning Commons: Q&A

Q & A

Our Q&A section provides you with answers to the most commonly asked questions. If you need assistance or have any other questions, call the Learning Commons at (305) 237-2502 or visit one of our Help Desks.

Q: Can I bring a snack?

A: No, food is not permitted in the Learning Commons. Covered drinks only.

There are several areas on campus tin which to eat. Ask our staff for the nearest areas.

The Kendall Learning Commons' food and drink guideline is intended to provide a clean environment for students, as well as to preserve library collections and technology.

The following guidelines apply:

  • Covered drinks are permitted (Ex. Bottles of water, coffee cups with lids, etc.)
  • Students found to be carrying or consuming food in the Learning Commons will be asked to enjoy it outside the area.
  • All library users are expected to act responsibly and courteously by disposing of trash and recyclables in the bins provided, and by cleaning up spills. Please inform the Help Desk of any spills.

Q: Why do I need to sign-in? Where do I get an MDC Card?

A: Signing-in helps us staff and purchase resources accordingly. You can get a MDC card at Student Life.

Go to room 100 and bring a government issued ID and your class schedule to obtain an MDC ID. More information can be found at https://www.mdc.edu/campus/mdcard.aspx.

Q: Who can help me find a book or article I need?

A: Reference librarians are available at the Reference Desk on the second floor of the Learning Commons.

Reference librarians are available:

  • Monday-Thursday: 8AM-9PM
  • Friday: 8AM-5PM
  • Saturday 8AM-1PM

Q: Can I book a study room for more than 2 hours?

A: No. To provide opportunities for all students, study rooms can only be booked for 2 hours a day following the 2-2-2-2 rule.

The 2-2-2-2 rule states:

  • A study room can be booked for up to 2 hours
  • A student can book a room up to 2 times a week
  • 2 students per study room
  • A study room can be booked 2 weeks in advance

Q: Why aren't more than two people allowed in a study room?

A: In an effort to provide students with a conducive study space, study room occupancy is limited to maintain an appropriate level of noise.

If you need an area for a larger group, there are several collaborative spaces on the Learning Commons floor that accommodates larger study groups.

Q: What can I do if the library doesn't have the book I need?

A: MDC allows inter-campus (ICL) and inter-library (ILL) loans which allows you to request materials from other campuses and libraries.

Visit the reference desk if you need assistance requesting an ICL or ILL loan.
