MUL 1010: Music Appreciation: Home

Course Description

In this course, students will survey the history of classical music from antiquity to the modern period, focusing on western music. The curriculum may also integrate a variety of popular and global styles where appropriate. Student learning outcomes: students will discuss and analyze music using terminology appropriate for the course; students will demonstrate fundamental knowledge of the works of significant composers; students will identify connections between music and the other arts; and students will identify historical styles and periods based on instruments and performance practices utilized.

Course Competencies

Competency 1: The Student will demonstrate knowledge of the basic elements of music.

Competency 2: The Student will demonstrate knowledge of basic music terminology.

Competency 3: The Student will demonstrate an understanding of various musical styles.

Competency 4: The Student will demonstrate a comprehension of the techniques and methods used by collaborative artists in music.

Competency 5: The Student will demonstrate knowledge of music literature. 

Competency 6: The Student will demonstrate an understanding of the listener’s roll in music.
