Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions: research appointments

What can a librarian help me with?

Librarians are available to assist with research needs and provide guidance on the use of research resources. Research and citation assistance can include:

Library Overview: basic overview of library resources

Topic Selection: narrowing down your research topic or help select a topic of interest to you

Finding Sources: navigate library databases, locate print and electronic books, identify useful websites.

Evaluating Sources: learn useful evaluation methods to verify information

Avoiding Plagiarism: correctly summarize, paraphrase, and quote sources using in-text citations.

MLA & APA Citation Styles: format your paper, create a works cited/ references page, correctly cite sources in-text.

How long is an appointment?

Appointments typically last 30 min to 1 hour. Students may need to schedule more than one appointment, depending on the level of assistance that is needed for their assignment.

Where do appointments take place?

Appointments are offered in-person and online. In-person appointments are conducted in the North campus library, building 2. Online appointments are conducted using Zoom. Specific room locations, Zoom links, and other appointment details are provided in the appointment confirmation email. Students should check their MDC student email for appointment details or visit their Navigate student page.

Can I make more than one appointment?

Students are allowed to make multiple appointments. Appointments can be scheduled ahead of time, throughout the semester.

Can I cancel or reschedule my appointment?

If you are unable to make your scheduled appointment, you may reschedule your appointment using Navigate. You may also call the circulation desk to notify us: (305) 237-1142.

If you are running late for your appointment, you may call or email the librarian you are meeting with to notify them. Contact information for the librarian you are meeting with is included in your confirmation email.

How do I prepare for my appointment?

Try to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your scheduled appointment time. Have your assignment instructions or instructor feedback prepared for review. If you already have sources for a research assignment, gather all of your sources in one document to make them easier to find and review.
