Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U): About CGI U

This guide provides resources for the Clinton Global Initiative at MDC. Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, CGI is an initiative of the Clinton Foundation that convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions.

Intro to CGI U

CGI U is a year-round nonpartisan program that aims to support aspiring young leaders in developing solutions to important global issues through learning, leadership, and action. Launched by President Clinton in 2007, CGI U has had more than 6,250 commitments since 2008 and $3 million in funding awarded. The CGI U experience begins with making a Commitment to Action, a pledge that dedicates oneself to making a change in a social issue of interest with a thought-out proposal for how that issue might be addressed. If chosen, students will earn access to an enlightening Social Impact Curriculum and have the opportunity to meet fellow rising changemakers and leading experts in social innovation through workshops and other experiences.

The CGI U 2023 annual meeting will be held in person in the spring of 2023. The location of the meeting has yet to be determined as the organization narrows down the decision for the host campus.

Objectives

CGI U’s approach focuses on three outcomes:

LEARNING

CGI U offers one-of-a-kind training, resources, and personalized mentorship on how to ideate, design, implement, and evaluate a social impact project.

LEADERSHIP

Through a year-round curriculum that includes student networking and engagement events, beginning with the global annual meeting, CGI U provides unique opportunities to connect aspiring leaders with leading experts in business, technology, and social impact.

ACTION

CGI U participants are selected on the strength of their Commitment to Action. CGI U helps them formulate their ideas and provides the necessary resources, feedback, tools, and potential funding streams to turn their ideas into action.

Additional Information

CGI U hosts year-round engagement events both in-person and virtually. Throughout the year, it offers skills workshops, community events, CEO circles, and other exciting programs that are both educational and allow the cohort to get to know each other and develop meaningful connections.

Students can email CGI U at cgiu@clintonglobalinitiative.org to sign up for informative alerts.
