Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U): Year-Round Opportunities

This guide provides resources for the Clinton Global Initiative at MDC. Established in 2005 by President Bill Clinton, CGI is an initiative of the Clinton Foundation that convenes global leaders to create and implement innovative solutions.

Year-Round Opportunities

Verizon Forward for Good Challenge

  • This challenge encourages students to use 5G and other leading technology to advance equity within the U.S. in CGI U’s five focus areas (education, environment and climate change, peace and human rights, poverty alleviation, and public health). Finalists earn access to intensive summer entrepreneurship training with VentureWell, seed funding, and living stipends.

IBM Call for Code Education Innovation Case Competition

  • Through this global challenge, students have the opportunity to learn about cloud development, AI, and emerging technologies while answering the question: How can technology improve sustainable production, consumption, and management of resources, reduce pollution, and protect biodiversity to create a greener future? By creating an open source solution in the cloud to address a sustainability issue, students have the chance to win a $200,000 grand prize along with solution implementation support from IBM and the Call for Code ecosystem.

Up to Us Campus Competition

  • Working with campus teams, students create campaigns to educate peers on the US’s long-term national debt, its implications on their economic opportunities, and what they can do about it. Participation in the program includes funding, access to management and leadership training, access to thought-leaders in various fields, and staff support. The first place team wins a $10,000 prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to a national conference where their achievement will be formally recognized.
