What is Precision Medicine?

Precision medicine is a way to treat or prevent disease that is personalized.

Precision medicine considers three elements when individualizing health care:

     Image of environment     Image of genetics    Image of lifestyle

 Environment                  Genetics                          Lifestyle


Examples of Environmental factors: 

  • air and noise pollution
  • water quality
  • proximity to factories or mass transit
  • natural disasters 

Examples of Genetic factors:

  • genetic ancestry (family history)
  • genetic traits (such as dimples or freckles)
  • higher risk for certain health conditions
  • reaction to medications

Examples of Lifestyle factors:

  • diet
  • exercise
  • smoking
  • alcohol
  • sleep
  • stress
