Zombie Apocalypse Survival Guide: MDC Zombie Survival Challenge

Sure, in the case of a zombie apocalypse you'll want to stock up on supplies. But you'll also need to stock up on information. Make a plan and be prepared!

When Zombies Attack!

A zombie outbreak has occurred at MDC and in the surrounding areas, even infecting the local wildlife, especially the ducks on campus. Do you think you can survive? What's your plan? 

Sign up with a team of up to five people to develop a plan to save humanity from annihilation. 

This event will be held in person at Kendall LR on Tuesday, October 29, 2024. 

There will be two session. At registration select one session to participate in. 

  • Session 1: 9:50 AM
  • Session 2: 12:40 PM

What Do We Do?

To show your skills, you will

  • Present your plan for survival in 5 minutes or less.
  • Try to win a custom Zombie Apocalypse: MDC Survival Challenge trophy.
  • Don't panic. You can also listsen to the plans and vote on which team's plan you think is best by siging up as a judge. 

What do I have to do and how do I do it?

Presenting Teams: 

  • Presentations should be approximately 5-minutes in length.
  • Your goal is to convince others to join your team to save humanity.
  • You may use the provided template, but feel free present in other formats such as videos, skits, or posters. Or just go ahead and wing it. The most important thing is that you provide your sources for your information. Misinformation is almost as big a problem as zombies. 

The Presentation

  • Introduce your team.
  • Pitch your team’s zombie response plan as the best option for humanity.
  • Name (cite) sources of information.

Judge Role

  • Judges will watch all the presentations.
  • Judges will vote for the team they think has the best chance to save the human race.

Winning Team

  • The team that receives the most votes will receive the coveted Zombie Survival Trophy.

Presentaion Guidelines

To be successful, your survival plan will need to address the following issues. They will show the judges (also your competitors) the way your plan works, the resources it requires, and how you will achieve success.

1. Location

Where will your headquarters be?

  • What is the region like?
  • What resources does it provide?
  • Who lives there?
  • Who in the area might have relevant skills or need the most assistance?

Library and government resources to consider: Atozdatabases, U.S. Census, Demographics Now

2. Leadership and Organization

What style of leadership will you use?

  • What structure will your organization employ?
  • How will jobs be assigned and leaders chosen?
  • What is the economy in your location like?
  • How will that influence your chances of survival?

Library resources to consider include: Business Source Complete, Business Insights: Essentials (Gale)Entrepreneurship (Gale Business)

What businesses and resource hubs exist in your proposed location?

  • How will you resupply resources like food and equipment?
  • Is trade an option?

Consider library and government resources like AtozdatabasesMarketLine Intelligence CenterBusiness Source Complete, and the U.S. Census.

3. Public Health 

What services exist near your HQ to manage outbreaks of disease?

  • Are there scientists and medical professionals nearby?
  • Do labs to create solutions (or add to problems) operate there?

Library resources to consider include: Atozdatabases, MEDLINE with Full Text (EBSCO), PubMed (National Library of Medicine)
