Below are some of our notable film and video titles in the technology collection.

  • The iMac Design-Milestones of 20th-Century Industrial Design  This video examines the iMac, the most widely sold computer in the world. The release of the colored, egg-shaped, transparent and user-friendly iMac computer by Apple in 1998 came as a bombshell in the computing market. Through pictures from past records, 3D animations showing computers of the future and works of contemporary artists, this film tells us with humor and originality how design has influenced the austere world of computing. (ARTE France)

  • The History of Computers  This program traces the development of the electronic computer, from the valve-based devices of the mid-20th century to the invention of silicon-based technology and through to the manufacture of the first personal computers. The constant phenomenal growth in computing power and speed and the resulting reduction in costs are central themes. The video ends by examining what the future might hold in relation to computing technologies. A viewable/printable worksheet is available online. (Video Education America)

  • Artificial Intelligence: The Risks Could Outweigh the Rewards: A Debate  This program explores Artificial Intelligence. As technology rapidly progresses, some proponents of artificial intelligence argue that it will help solve complex social problems and offer humans greater powers and virtual immortality. But critics of artificial intelligence argue that its rewards may be overpromised, and that the pursuit of super-cognitive computers and autonomous machines could have unintended—and scary—consequences. Should we trust or fear the promise of artificial intelligence? (Intelligence Squared US)

  • TEDTalks: Don Tapscott: How the Blockchain Is Changing Money and Business  This TED Talk examines the blockchain. What is the blockchain? If you don't know, you should; if you do, chances are you still need some clarification on how it actually works.
