CELEBRATING FIRST-GENERATION STORIES

November 8th is a national day to recognize and celebrate first-generation college students—their impact, their achievements, and the journeys that shape them. The date was chosen by the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) and FirstGen Forward (formerly the Center for First-generation Student Success) because on November 8, 1965, the Higher Education Act was signed into law. That legislation expanded access to college by funding programs, resources, and support that helped more students enter, stay, and succeed in higher education.

At Miami Dade College, Learning Resources and FirstGen Forward have been proudly celebrating first-generation students since 2022. Through speaker events, professional development, creative activities, gamified learning, and meaningful giveaways, they've helped build a growing sense of community. Today, that energy stretches across all eight MDC campuses, creating a vibrant network of first-gen students, supporters, and stories.

ARE YOU A FIRST-GENERATION STUDENT?

First-Gen / [Furst-jen] / Adjective

If you’re not sure, you’re certainly not alone. While the definition can be complicated, being a first-gen student means that your parents did not complete a 4-year college or university degree in the United States. You are still considered first-generation even if your siblings attended and graduated from a 4-year institution.

WHY SPOTLIGHT FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS?

First-generation students represent more than half of all undergraduates in the U.S. Yet, first-generation students are graduating far less than their peers.

  • College graduates are 88% more likely to be employed; earn higher wages, and twice as likely to be civically engaged.
  • First-gen students are applying to college at twice the rate of continuing-generation students. And developing supports for first-gen students will benefit everyone.
  • Closing the completion gap will result in 4.4 million more graduates and a net benefit of $700 billion to the U.S. economy.
