Expectations

  • Age Requirement: Applicants must be at least 18 years old to participate in the volunteer program.
  • Enrollment Status: Applicants must be actively enrolled in academic courses to be eligible for volunteering.
  • Behavior and Conduct:

    • Volunteers must maintain a professional and friendly demeanor when interacting with patrons and staff.

    • Volunteers are expected to adhere to library policies regarding appearance, conduct, attendance, safety, and attire.

    • Respect for library staff and fellow volunteers is mandatory.

  • Dress code: 

    • Maintain a neat and clean appearance during working hours, and dress appropriately for assigned duties.

    • Violations of the Dress Code may result in dismissal from shifts.

      • No tank tops, halter tops, low-cut shirts, or low-cut dresses.
      • No exposed midriffs.
      • Shirts with inappropriate or obscene comments, phrases, or pictures are not allowed.
      • No torn pants. Pants must be worn at the appropriate waistline.
  • Schedule Commitment: Follow assigned schedules punctually, and notify supervisors promptly of any inability to work as scheduled.

  • Policy Adherence: Volunteers must follow all library policies, especially those regarding confidentiality.

  • Supervision and Scheduling: Your activities will be supervised by library staff. Schedules will accommodate academic commitments.

  • Conflict Resolution: Issues will be addressed by the library administration in a professional manner.

  • Orientation and Training: Comprehensive training will be prepared for your role.

  • Non-Contractual Relationship: This agreement does not establish employment or a binding contract. Volunteers failing to comply with library rules or perform satisfactorily may face dismissal. Dismissal procedures include:

    • Discussion and verbal warnings.
    • Dismissal from volunteer duties.

About Us

MDC Hialeah Learning Resources aims to connect Miami Dade College students with academic support services and with the campus community by helping students acquire a unique learning opportunity which will enhance their academic skills. Students will have the chance to:

  • Promote academic support services through participation in in-person events and digital marketing materials
  • Highlight special collections
  • Shadow various positions and functions to appreciate and gain a better understanding of what is required to build a career within the library.

This site promotes communication, teamwork, leadership, empathy, and work-force readiness, which will help students build connection and foster positive relationships, motivating them to contribute and help their community.

Responsibilities

Inventory:

  • Weeding library collection
  • Preparing discarded items
  • Preparing donation items
  • Supporting efforts to keep the Makerspace up to date and organized
  • Shelving books and adopt a shelf
  • Putting dust jacket covers, spine stickers on books

Front Desk/Circulation:

  • Providing customer service support at the circulation desk
  • Acting as greeters

Outreach/Events:

  • Decorating for special events
  • Creating collection displays
  • Helping with programming
  • Distributing promotional materials around the campus
  • Assisting with tabling events
  • Copying fliers, handouts
  • Preparing crafts for programs

Shadowing/Professional Development:

  • Shadowing tutoring disciplines
  • Shadowing acquisition specialist and copy cataloguers
  • Completing a current cover letter and resume
  • Attend at least three library instructions
  • Create LinkedIn account
