Raul Alarcon Nicholas Brejcha Ana Camba

Raul Alarcon-Gomez is a second-year student at Miami-Dade College, West Campus. He is currently majoring in Biomedical Engineering (BS), hoping to finish his career at the University of Florida, and specializing in biomaterials. Raul looks forward to expanding his knowledge in many aspects, focusing more on the mathematical and scientific explanation of how things function. During the summer term of 2021, he had the privilege of volunteering in a STEM summer research with various professors from Miami-Dade College where he put into practice how disciplines work together. Some of Raul’s career goals include pursuing a Master’s degree in biomedical engineering, nursing, or chemistry as these are some of the practices that he is most interested in.

Nicholas Michael Brejcha is a graduate of the Honors College at MDC from the Eduardo J. Padrón Campus, where he majored in biotechnology. He is a Project Coordinator at NAMI Miami-Dade, a non-profit focused on providing support and advocacy to individuals with mental health conditions and their families. Nicholas is currently beginning his Bachelor’s degree and will be attending the University of Florida. He intends to intern in a research & development lab in the future. When he is not participating in scientific research, he enjoys reading science fiction and going out for nature walks.

Ana Camba is a second-year engineering student at Eduardo J. Padron Campus. Her passion for coding and computers brought her to the Miami Dade College Honors Program where she is working on her Associate of Arts degree in Computer Engineering to further transfer to a four-year university and complete her Bachelor's degree. She is currently the Vice President of Sigma Zeta Honor Society, the Layout Editor and Web Designer for Urbana Literary & Arts Magazine, and an active member of Phi Theta Kappa. Next year she hopes to get an internship at Google or Microsoft that will provide real-life experience and important technological skills.

Sofia Di Nino Carol Maite Roman Espinal Mark Gomez
Sofia Di Nino-Gomez is a second-year student from Miami Dade College Honors at the Kendall Campus majoring in Biomedical Engineering. Thanks to the immense support from the MDC faculty and family members, Sofia has been able to receive the Dean's list awards. After completing her bachelor's degree, Sofia will work to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree. Carol Maite Espinal Roman is a second-year student at Miami Dade College West Campus, where she is pursuing an Associate in Arts (A.A) in Engineering Science. She is planning to transfer to the University of Florida to finish a Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering and pursue a medical career as a cardiothoracic surgeon. She was invited to be a volunteer in a research project during the past summer where she had the opportunity to work along other students and her mentors in an interdisciplinary project in which Math, Chemistry and Biology were applied in real life situations. In her studies, Carol is focusing on learning and understanding how the biomedical engineering field works in order to start her pathway as a prosthetic designer. [Bio not available.]

Carlos Gonzalez Fabiana Gonzalez Arturo Granados
Carlos Gonzalez is a third-year student at Florida International University, who recently graduated from Miami Dade College with an Associate Degree in Biology. He is continuing to complete his Bachelor’s degree (BS) at FIU. He was a member of the PTK Honor Society at MDC and the American Medical Student Association at FIU. He has been part of the STEM Summer Research Program focusing on a Mathematical model to represent the interaction of nebulized stem cells and how the immune system responds in the lungs in patient with COVID-19; and will continue this research project more in depth during the fall semester.  Upon completion of his undergraduate studies, Mr. Gonzalez intends to apply to medical school and progress pursuing a career in the medical field. Fabiana Gonzalez is currently a second-year student at Miami Dade Honors College, Padron Campus. She is from Venezuela and moved here three years ago. She is pursuing a computer engineering career where she wants to focus on programming. She is a very dedicated person, loves to help her community, and was recently awarded the Coca-Cola Leadership of Promise Award. Arturo Granados is a third-year student at Miami Dade College pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. Currently, he is the recipient of an AISLE Grant research scholarship, which has allowed him to engage in research on data analytics. He is working alongside his professors to better understand and apply text mining techniques. As a student, he has performed well, earning a spot in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and earning multiple accolades for his writing skills during high school. He has a wide array of interests, among them philosophy, science, and poetry. In 2022, Arturo will be joining the United States Navy. He hopes to, through his efforts, make his family and acquaintances proud and happy to have him around.

Sami Katta Karen Maqueira Veronica Muzio
Sami Katta is an engineering student at the Wolfson Campus. He has been named on the Dean’s list three times and obtained certifications in Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and Tableau. Sami is Secretary of the Makers Club, member of Phi Theta Kappa, and Phi Beta Lambda. He is interested in learning more about data science and is currently studying the fundamentals of building predictive software. Sami aspires to complete his Bachelor’s degree and embark on his tech startup business. Karen Maqueira is a sophomore at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus majoring in Mechanical Engineering and plans to specialize in Electrical Engineering upon transferring to a 4-year institution. She is a recipient of the Honors Fellow Award and strives to maintain a high GPA throughout her academic career. She is currently an Undergraduate Research Intern with Miami Dade’s School of Science, working on a biological research project. Although biology is not her intended field of study, she takes an interest in public health as disease propagation especially with the COVID-19 pandemic. Her long-term goals include graduating from an accredited university with a Bachelor’s degree to later attain her Professional Engineers license. Veronica Muzio Crego is a student at Miami Dade College Kendall Campus. She is a Biology major who will be graduating in Fall 2021, with plans to transfer to FIU in the Spring where she will be finishing her degree. In the future, Veronica hopes to pursue a career in the medical field or marine biology.

Romy Paz Mariavalentina Perez Dailenis Rangel

Romy Paz is a second-year student at Miami Dade Honors College Kendall Campus, where she is pursuing a degree in Biology (AA). She is currently working on a mathematical and biological research project concerning public health as an Undergraduate Research Intern with the Miami Dade School of Science. She has an interest in public health and the propagation of diseases stemming from the Covid-19 pandemic. After graduating with her Associates, she plans to graduate with a degree in Biochemistry (BS) and minor in infectious diseases from a 4-year institution.

Mariavalentina Perez is a second-year student with a pathway in Pre-medicine at Miami Dade College. She is majoring in Biology and is planning to transfer to Florida International University next semester. She is planning to apply to medical school after graduating with her Bachelor in Biological Sciences. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, The National Honor Society, and The Global Medical Brigades Organization. She is also part of the STEM Advanced Institute for Scholastic Leadership Experience project. She has been a student researcher for the STEM Summer Research Program which she is focusing on modeling the time evolution of COVID-19 cases using the SEIAHQRD model along with the effect of social emotions and lockdown measures. She is continuing her research during the Fall semester, which would allow her to go more in-depth. Mariavalentina enjoys helping others and has been volunteering in organizations such as the MS National Society and Fundación J.J Pérez Aleman. Dailenis Rangel is a second-year student at Miami Dade Honors College. She is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Biological in Sciences degree at MDC. Dailenis has been awarded the Honors College Award Scholarship, which has allowed her to be involved with her community and engage in research with professors Dr. Belarmino Gonzales and Dr. Eric Hernandez. With her mentors, Dailenis had the opportunity to use Markov chains to observe, monitor, and predict the spread of Covid-19. Dailenis has been involved in many humanitarian projects, such as volunteering at Palmetto General Hospital, where she helped take care of Cancer patients. Dailenis hopes to transfer to a four-year university to pursue her degree and become a physician in the future.

Gloria Robaina Carlos Rodriguez Daniela Rodriguez

Gloria Robaina is a 2nd year Pre-Med college student at Miami Dade College where she hopes to acquire an Associate’s degree in biology. She plans to transfer to a 4-year university and to continue participating in research and health-related projects. She plans on later applying to medical school and to become a surgeon. Gloria Robaina has the honor of being on the Dean’s List more than once and she is also a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, The National Honor Society, and more health-related clubs. She is also part of the STEM Advanced Institute for Scholastic Leadership Experience project. She was a student-researcher for the STEM Summer Research Program, in which she worked alongside Dr. Bestard and student, Carlos Rodriguez. They studied “The COVID-19 Pandemic and its Effects on the South Floridian Socioeconomically Vulnerable.” She is continuing her research in the Fall semester where she plans to dive deeper into the subject and learn more about the effects of COVID-19 in the Floridian Community.

Carlos Rodriguez is a 2nd year student at the Honors College in MDC, based in the Kendall Campus where he hopes to acquire an Associate’s degree in Chemistry. He’s the recipient of various awards and honors such as the Dean’s List, Honors Fellow Award, Silver Knight Award nominee, and more. In his research project with the help of Dr. Jaime Bestard and Gloria Robaina, he studied” The COVID-19 Pandemic and its effects on the South Floridian Socioeconomically Vulnerable”. He hopes to transfer to a 4-year university where he can continue his endeavors in research and medicine/allied health fields as a pre-medical student. As the current Co-Founder and President of HOSA Future Health Professionals, he hopes to educate his peers through monthly efforts dedicated to studying diseases and learning from health professionals (a passion he hopes to continue far in life). Daniela Rodriguez is a student at Miami-Dade College Kendall Campus pursuing a Bachelor’s in Data Analytics. She competed in MDC’s first ever Datathon and was part of the group that obtained first place at the event. A life-long passion for sports have fueled an interest in sports analytics and in the process of understanding sports more in-depth. Upon graduation, Daniela will be pursuing a career in sports analytics for one of the many professional sports teams in Florida.

Leonel Zchesan    
Leonel Zchesan is a second-year student at the Miami Dade Honors College, where he is currently pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences. He is the recipient of the Honors College Award Scholarship, which has allowed him to engage in research with two STEM professors, Dr. Belarmino Gonzales and Dr. Eric Hernandez. Leonel had the opportunity to learn more about Markov chains and how scientists can use them to predict the outbreak of COVID-19. Leonel has volunteered in medical-related institutions form a young age and has learned a lot about medicine.  For example, at Baptist Hospital, he helped take care of older adults. Leonel hopes to transfer to a four-year university and pursue his degree in biology to become a physician one day.
