CDL - Commercial Driver's License Program : Module 4

Continuing Education presents the CDL (Commercial Driver's License) program.

The student will be able to demonstrate trip planning preparation procedures by:

Checking vehicle registration and permit.
Checking accident report packets for proper contents.
Planning a route from one point to another that is optimal in terms of travel time, fuel costs, potential hazards, and federal, state, and local travel restrictions.
Describing the use of manual and contemporary GPS navigation systems.
Estimating travel times and arranging for a secure place for layovers, especially when transporting hazardous materials.
Demonstrating map reading skills.
Estimating fuel consumption and planning fuel stops.
Estimating expense money and obtaining funds and/or credit cards.

TRUCK PARKING DEVELOPMENT HANDBOOK
The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Office of Operations (HOP) is pleased to present
the Truck Parking Development Handbook.
This Handbook serves as a resource for planners, engineers, local officials, departments of
transportation (DOTs), metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs), economic development
organizations, and other entities involved in freight and land use planning. The Handbook
presents the fundamentals of truck parking issues, including reasons why drivers need to park,
factors that influence parking demand, and relevant regulations. The Handbook also introduces
quantitative approaches for estimating truck parking demand and for conducting a benefit-cost
analysis of truck parking developments. Practices for siting and designing truck parking facilities
are outlined, and the Handbook concludes with strategies for developing truck parking to support
driver safety and security, quality of life in communities with industrial uses, mobility, and
economic competitiveness.

SEMI TRUCK AND TRAILER DIMENSIONS
A tractor trailer is the combination of a tractor unit and one or more semi-trailers designed to carry bulk freight. A semi-trailer attaches to the truck with a type of hitch system called a fifth-wheel. The fifth wheel is permanently attached to the semi truck. The king pin is a part of the semi trailer. The truck backs the fifth-wheel under the trailer, lining it up with the king pin until it locks into place.

There are many names for tractor trailers: a transport truck, semi-truck, trailer truck, tractor truck, truck tractor, transfer truck, articulated truck, semi-trailer, tractor-trailer, semi-tractor, tractor, sleeper cabs, big rig, and of course eighteen-wheeler.
