CDL - Commercial Driver's License Program : Module 2

Continuing Education presents the CDL (Commercial Driver's License) program.

The student will be able to understand and comply with vehicle operating regulations by:

  • Complying with Hours of Service regulations.
  • Maintaining a complete, neat, and accurate driver's duty status log including discussion of electronic logs.
  • Keeping accurate records required by hours of service regulations.
  • Reviewing mathematical calculations necessary to recap and apply totals to the hours of service regulations.
  • Determining driving hours remaining on a particular day or tour of duty.
  • Complying with applicable United States Department of Transportation regulations including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Rules and Regulations - Compliance, Safety, and Accountability (CSA), particularly the role of drivers and motor carriers.
  • Complying with Federal, State, and local traffic laws including restrictions on vehicle size and weight including permits, when required.

Hours of Service LOGBOOK Rules and Regulations and Examples

Listed below are 30 examples of the Federal hours-of-service (HOS) rules. Most, but not all of the examples, focus on the HOS rules for property-carrying commercial motor vehicles (CMVs). Four examples of the HOS rules for passenger-carrying vehicles and a 60/70 hour rule example is also included. Each example includes:

  • One or more completed grids from a driver's daily Record of Duty Status (RODS) or log (where there are consecutive logs, the labels "Day 1", "Day 2", "Day 3", etc. are used to tell the respective days apart);
  • A brief description of any violations that may exist; and 
  • An in-depth explanation of the HOS rules as they apply to the sample RODS.
