CDL - Commercial Driver's License Program : Module 5

Continuing Education presents the CDL (Commercial Driver's License) program.

The student will be able to demonstrate vehicle inspection procedures by:

  • Checking for previous days' DVIR.
  • Checking the general appearance and condition of the vehicle.
  • Checking fuel, oil, water levels, automatic transmission fluid level, and diesel emissions fluid (DEF).
  • Checking signal lights, stoplights, and running lights.
  • Checking tires, rims, and suspension.
  • Checking horn, windshield wipers, mirrors, and reflectors.
  • Checking emergency bi-directional reflective triangles, and fire extinguishers.
  • Checking instruments for normal readings.
  • Checking steering system, brake action, and tractor protection valve.
  • Checking cargo blocking, bracing, and tie down.
  • Checking perform en route inspections.
  • Performing a post-trip inspection of the vehicle and all systems.

- Parking Brake is in applied position

- Transmission is neutral

- Apply one foot to the service brake and start the engine “on”

- Build up air pressure up to 120 psi

- Then, governor should cut off

- The system is fully charged at 120 psi (sneeze sound)

LABS Test

LABS stands for Leaks, Alarms, Buttons and Service Brake = LABS.

The LABS test is a method to remember all the steps to test the air brake system in a commercial vehicle, which must be done during a pre-trip inspection.
