9/11 Observance Ceremony at North Campus

Main Ideas

  • On September 11, 2001, nineteen terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes in the United States. The hijackers crashed two planes into the World Trade Center in New York and one plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers wrested control from the hijackers.
  • The terrorist organization al-Qaeda later claimed responsibility for the attacks. The group had previously perpetrated an attack on the World Trade Center as well as US targets in the Middle East and Africa.
  • The attacks spurred the Global War on Terror, which included US-led military invasions of Afghanistan in 2001 and Iraq in 2003.
  • In addition to the nearly three thousand victims who lost their lives during the attacks, many police officers, firefighters, government agents, and local residents sustained injuries that led to health complications, including cancer and death.
  • Many Muslim Americans have reported increased harassment and discrimination as a result of the attacks. Several activists and media pundits protested an attempt to establish an Islamic cultural center near the World Trade Center.
  • Politicians have frequently evoked the attacks. This practice has sparked some allegations of politicizing the tragedy, especially when referenced in campaign materials.
