Campus Learning Community

Collaboratively exploring Earth Literacy, the Earth Charter, the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and other environmental topics

One Degree of Change; UN Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action) Campus Learning Community at Miami Dade College.
Goal 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

One Degree of Change Learning Objectives

What You Should Know:

  • The greenhouse effect is a natural phenomenon caused by an insulating layer of gases in the upper atmosphere.
  • Current climate change is an anthropogenic (caused by humans) phenomenon resulting from increased greenhouse gas emissions from human activities.
  • Human activities contribute most to climate change on a global, national, local and individual level.

Take Action

What You Can Do:

  • Plant Trees - During photosynthesis, trees and other plants absorb carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. You can plant trees where you live or volunteer to plant trees in your community.
  • Reduce Use of Private Vehicles - Use public transportation, bike, or walk whenever possible to reduce Earth-warming greenhouse gas emissions from personal vehicles.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Refuse - Reducing consumption, reusing items, recycling non-reusable items, and refusing plastic products helps combat excessive use of energy and natural resources and prevents pollution.
  • Eat Less Meat
    • Eating less meat can dramatically reduce your ecological footprint by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation, and soil degradation associated with animal agriculture.
  • Invite Others to Join the Climate Movement - Raise awareness about environmental issues by talking about them with others and sharing ways to take action.
    • Stay informed! Subscribe to [INSIDE] THE MOVEMENT, an action toolkit for the climate movement that is updated weekly with resources to learn what is happening in the movement and ways to take action, all in one place.
