In the Spring semester of 2025, Homestead Campus students, with support from the Miami Dade College Humanities Edge Program, undertook an interdisciplinary research project focused on Silver Green Cemetery, the last remaining African American burial site in South Miami-Dade County. Combining history and digital humanities, the team conducted genealogical research using primary source documents to create a repository of stories and a podcast. The study is ongoing, and this Libguide will serve as a digital repository for all future research.
Silver Green Cemetery, established in 1905, is one of South Dade’s few remaining African American burial sites. Many similar cemeteries have been neglected or erased, losing vital cultural and historical information. The site’s history reveals the struggles and achievements of South Dade’s African American community, including ties to segregation, labor movements, and military service. The last burial at Silver Green was held in 1955.
