Here's the recording of the Graphic Novel Book Club's discussion of wordless graphic novels, held on April 8, 2025. In this interactive session, librarian Alia Shields uncovers the essential principles artists use to craft emotionally compelling narratives without words. Drawing on Molly Bang's influential book, Picture This: How Pictures Work, we learn how composition, color, and shape guide readers through unforgettable stories such as Shaun Tan's The Arrival, Lupano & Panaccione's A Sea of Love, and Daishu Ma's Leaf. For accompanying comments, see the chat transcript [PDF]. The conversation continues! Feel free to share your thoughts. |

ARTS & LETTERS DAY AND WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH COMMITTEES INVITE YOU TO
Presented by Professor Magdalena Lamarre

Ever since the earliest superheroes emerged in comic strips and comic books, they’ve had one thing in common: They have been overwhelmingly male. Male characters and creators have dominated the medium since its inception. However, there is another, less frequently told story regarding the history of comic strips and comic books; one in which women have played a major role. Women comic strip and comic book artists and writers have long contributed to the medium, often having to hide their gender to present their work. This program examines their early and ongoing contributions to the medium, giving you a chance to discover the other superheroes of comic books: women cartoonists. |

Our current Book Club selection is Yuki Urushibara's Mushishi. |
They have existed since the dawn of time. Some live in the deep darkness behind your eyelids. Some eat silence. Some thoughtlessly kill. Some simply drive men mad. They are known as mushi - creatures that came into being shortly after life emerged from the primordial ooze. They still exist parallel to our own lives and can only be seen by a select few. As a mushishi, Ginko is one of the few who are aware of their existence, and this young man with a sardonic smile roams from place to place with the knowledge and skill to aid those unwittingly affected by mushi. |
