Carpathian Peaks to Mississippi Streams: A Phenomenological Study on Ukrainian Americans by Natushka Senat

Abstract

This research navigates through the eyes of the audience, the viewers, as to why, we as a society, crave for the Spectacle. With media all around us, I approached this research analyzing articles, documentaries, video essays, and observed patterns in media in everyday life. Not only seeing it from the audience’s viewpoint but also the entertainment as well as to why the entertainment wants to entertain. I discovered that the relationship between entertainment and audience draws further back in history with its foundation being to generate public approval and create diversion from the actual problem. Capitalism. It suppresses their creativity and individuality while simultaneously molding them with narrated ideologies and behaviors. In modern times, the package has changed but not the product. I navigated on the path of how this kind of influence can cause much damage and the effects it has done to us as an individual and as a society. Unwavering we are to being conditioned, how further could the “entertainment” go to provide these stories and how can we as the audience draw the line to live within our own story. It is important to have awareness of Spectacles and their purpose because it is calculated exactly to attain their wanted result, forever changing how you feel, think, and experience. To showcase this concept I have decided to create a mixed media artwork using both printed and originally created images combined in a classic collage style with some possible drawing and painting accents to emphasize my idea.
