In The Shadow of a Dragon: Tolkien's Effect on Fantasy Storytelling by Alexander Rodriguez

Abstract

When starting this project, I had one main goal: to find where the shadow of JRR Tolkien loomed over the fantasy genre. To do this, I analyzed books, writings, interviews, and excerpts from the giants of modern-day fantasy to see where they borrowed or drew inspiration from Tolkien. However, I wanted to make sure that I wasn’t solely focused on literature as he also affected verbal storytelling, and for that, I looked to D&D. My research concluded that not only were all the authors influenced by his work but that most of them proudly wore it on their sleeves. Finally, for my deliverable, I decided to create a D&D module that would take the players through three novels by writers who have all expressed an influence from Tolkien’s, seminal works. Through this effort, I could display a synthesis and cross-pollination of the stories into a playable learning experience.
