Environmental Policy

Environmental policy is crucial as it sets the framework for managing our natural resources and ecosystems, safeguarding against pollution and habitat destruction, and addressing pressing issues like climate change. It guides governments, industries, and individuals towards sustainable practices, ensuring a healthier planet for current and future generations. Effective environmental policies promote responsible resource use, reduce ecological footprint, and foster international cooperation to tackle global environmental challenges.

Voters in New York approved a $4.2 billion dollar environmental bond initiative while voters in California rejected a ballot measure that would have levied a tax on high earners to pay for electric vehicle infrastructure. Blanca Begert, reporting fellow at Grist, discusses what New Yorkers will be going into debt to pay for, and how Californians will now prepare for their EV future.

In the wake of this week’s US election, this episode features a conversation with Will Gartshore, WWF’s senior director for policy and government affairs. Will reflects on the progress made on environmental policy over the last two years (2:00), from re-joining the Paris Agreement to the passage of historic new investments to address the climate crisis. Will then outlines what’s left on the to-do list of the current Congress (8:53), and what environmental policies might stand a chance of moving forward over the next two years (15:25).

Victoria Mills, Managing Director of Environmental Defense Fund’s EDF+Biz program discusses how some companies are starting to advocate for more stringent climate policies as they see climate change affecting their operations, supply chains, and communities. She also describes how EDF acts as both advisor and catalyst to their engagement, shares some challenges and opportunities of working with companies on climate policy, and offers advice for those interested in pursuing a career in climate and business.

Over the past two years, the United States made a significant investment to improve industries and protect the environment. The funding in the Inflation Reduction Act and Bipartisan Infrastructure Law could help reduce the country's carbon emissions by 50% in 2030. However, a new debate is happening in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives. House Majority Leader, Steve Scalise (R, La.), supports a bill called the Limit, Save, Grow Act of 2023, which prioritizes lower gas prices over developing renewable energy sources. Adrien Salazar, who works for the Global Grassroots Justice Alliance, is here to talk about the strategies of Republicans and Democrats as they try to raise the debt ceiling.

Climate change is fundamentally about people. In California, environmental justice activists have galvanized around human impacts of climate action—such as air pollution, poverty alleviation, and green jobs—to build a policy response that focuses on local communities and public health. Dr. Michael Méndez, assistant professor of environmental planning and policy at the University of California, Irvine, joins Charles Harper (YSE ’22) to discuss his book, Climate Change from the Streets: How Conflict and Collaboration Strengthen the Environmental Justice Movement, and the sometimes contentious history of incorporating environmental justice and the concerns of low-income people of color into climate change policy.
