Fighting Food Deserts by Terrill Smith

Abstract

Most people first think of the sun and beaches when they think about Miami. Believe it or not, the most critical daily issue for many people living in Miami is simply finding nutritious food. This research project focuses on food deserts, and food insecurity in the communities in Miami that impact students specifically enrolled at Miami Dade County North Campus. It is a community problem, but it also severely impacts the well-being of minority and first generation college students whose path to higher education already makes them vulnerable. Many students enrolled on North Campus live in areas designated by the United States Department of Agriculture as food deserts. In fact, a million South Floridians find it difficult to find healthy food, according to the American Heart Association of South Florida and Miami ranks highest in the number of people living in food deserts in Florida. My interest in the topic stems from my work as a Student Government leader and a changemaker. I noticed the need for better food options for my peers, and I began to dig deeper into the issue, organizing food drives and helping to tend the vegetable garden at the North Campus.
