Cultural and Ethnic Diversity in Early Childhood Education by Jason Verduga

Abstract

I researched “What is the importance of cultural and ethnic diversity in Early Childhood Education?” I explored resources with questions in mind such as: “How can teachers create a culturally welcoming classroom?” “What are the long-term benefits of having cultural and ethnic diversity in ECE?” and “What strategies can be used to influence Cultural and ethnic diversity to children at a young age? “With the resources provided by the MDC database, I decided to create a painting with multicultural students being read to by their teacher with an earth as a brain, symbolizing the cultural awareness and knowledge. As an Early Childhood Education Major living in Miami, filled with many different cultures and ethnicities, I know how important cultural diversity is. Around the age 2-3, children begin to acknowledge the differences between themselves and others. Therefore, it is essential to open students’ minds to different cultures and ethnicities to make sure every everyone feels welcomed, starting in the classroom. Through research, I learned the benefits of introducing diversity in the classroom, strategies to incorporate different ethnicities, and how to create a welcoming and positive classroom. As an Early Childhood Major, I plan to use these resources to one day build the foundation of my classroom.
