The rise of consumerism in the Western world has brought demand for the production of cheap, trendy clothing to an unrealistic standard. While many Americans can’t be bothered to look far beyond the price tag when making a purchase at a “fast fashion” retailer, millions of sweatshop laborers have been forced to pay a much higher cost. My piece, Worn, is a mixed media diorama -inspired by imagery from the Rana Plaza disaster of 2013, that serves as a commentary on this dynamic between blind consumerism and the horrific reality of the modern garment manufacturing industry.
