AI Ethics Toolbox

AI ethics resources for faculty use. Including valuable AI tools specifically relevant for teaching AI ethics.

This YouTube video discusses the importance of AI transparency, emphasizing the need for understanding how AI systems make decisions, especially when these decisions significantly impact individuals' lives. Transparent systems should be traceable, allowing us to see the data and processes behind decisions, and ensuring that the deployer can explain both the system's operations and the rationale for its use. Given the complexity of modern AI, often referred to as the "black box problem," it is crucial that individuals are informed when they interact with AI and are provided the option to choose human interaction instead.

This talk by Nicholas Diakopoulos explores the different facets of AI transparency, including the various audiences for transparency information, how AI decisions integrate with human behavior, and the technical complexity of AI systems. Diakopoulos also considers the role of AI operators, business concerns like trade secrecy, and legal aspects in government settings. He presents arguments for and against transparency in AI ethics, providing examples where transparency is ethically essential in certain AI systems.

In this video, Will Browne discusses the trade-offs between AI performance and the trustworthiness of AI decisions. He emphasizes the importance of using higher-level abstract patterns to make AI and robots more understandable and acceptable in everyday applications, from automated welding to assistive healthcare. Browne’s 25-year research focuses on developing transparent, counter-factual, and explainable AI, moving away from opaque deep learning networks.

In this talk, Sandra Jensen Land, the Royal Danish Ambassador to Singapore, shares Denmark's approach to AI, emphasizing trust, transparency, and human-centric values. She explains that Denmark's digitalization efforts focus on empowering citizens by putting them in control of their data and using AI to enhance well-being and innovation. Land highlights examples of Danish AI innovations in healthcare, such as Radiobotics and Corti, which showcase the potential of AI to improve human lives. She concludes by advocating for international collaboration and ethical frameworks to guide AI development globally.
