Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Symposium | Fall 2020

Abstract

Music is found in all cultures and provides a universal way of communication for receptive individuals. Research indicates that experiencing music increases cognition and may act as a therapeutic measure in mental health. Additional investigation demonstrates that individuals exposed or perceptive to music appear to have a higher expression of neurotransmitters and genes that release feel-good hormones, regulating moods. Moods impact our state of mind, influencing a person's ability to engage in social interactions. Hence, this undergraduate research project explores the benefits of music on the human psyche that may positively impact individuals in professional and social settings. Through a synergistic analysis of music research, it is shown that a quick session of listening to music provide benefits in the ability to process information, lessen anxiety, communicate with others, and induce our best emotional state.
