Abstract
This research project focuses on creative non-fiction with the goal of developing two original pieces on themes that affect people in society. To educate herself on the form, the researcher read several essays to give her an overview of the strategies for success in this form of writing, such as “What is Creative Nonfiction? Memoirs, Literary Journalism, and More,” in addition to some sample essays by Joan Didion and Virginia Woolf. She also took much inspiration from the memoir Ordinary Girls by Jaquira Diaz, after attending her live reading at MDC Kendall on October 8, 2020. The themes of this research address body image and gender identity in the Hispanic community, specifically, the difficulties that young women face in regard to these issues, including anxiety, weight loss and gain, and the search for identity and acceptance. During weekly meetings with her mentor, she was able to learn the style of creative non-fiction in order to develop her own essays.
