Abstract
Words have seemingly been powerful for as long as they have existed – so much so that even some works of literature were able to spark change in society, opening the eyes of the world around them. This research attempts to understand the impact fictional stories such as Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin, and Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist had on their readers. The research methodology involved conducting literature reviews, reading through academic papers and essays, analyzing, and contextualizing historical periods. The research concluded that whether fictional characters or not, the experiences of the people in these stories and depiction of their humanity via pathos, opened the eyes of their readers to the societal injustices these literary works confronted head-on. Reviewing the research and its findings will come into the deliverable form of a video essay, tackling literature’s power to change the world, as it already has before.
