Abstract
Miami is known for its large Latino population, which has contributed to the city’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity. However, the language barrier between English and Spanish speakers has created challenges in worker-customer interactions within the retail sector. This research addresses the question: How can knowledge of basic Spanish and context-specific terminology contribute to better worker-customer interactions in the retail work environment? By conducting historical research on the usage of Spanish in Miami and how it has shaped the city today, we can better understand the roots of these linguistic challenges. Through the implementation of a retail workers' guidebook for basic Spanish and operational language, this study explores practical solutions to overcoming communication barriers. This approach not only enhances customer service but also empowers workers by providing them with tools for more effective interactions. Evidence suggests that knowledge of basic Spanish can improve service quality and shift workers’ motivation from extrinsic to intrinsic by fostering a more inclusive and efficient work environment. The findings of this study can inform future research and support the development of similar guidebooks for other commonly spoken foreign languages in Miami. As the city continues to evolve, addressing language barriers remains crucial for fostering acceptance and inclusion within its diverse population.
