A Civic Action Portfolio (CAP) is the ongoing compilation of both documentation and reflection on completed civic actions throughout your career at MDC. Spearheaded and managed by MDC’s Institute for Civic Action and Democracy (iCED), these portfolios have given many MDC students a competitive edge in transfer, scholarship, and work applications.
Changemaker Showcase
The Changemaker Showcase, hosted by Homestead Campus, is designed to highlight and recognize the work of our students on social innovation and social change projects. Social innovations are new strategies, concepts, ideas and organizations that aim to meet social needs resulting from working conditions, education, community development, and health. These ideas are created with the goal of extending and strengthening civil society.
D3: Art + Design + Tech Virtual Conference
The D3 interdisciplinary conference’s primary focus is in education, professional development, and experiential learning. D3 brings together a diverse community of independent thinkers who work on projects rooted in these emergent creative industries. Motion design, visual effects, computer animation, and audio technology are emphasized through lectures, portfolio reviews, and hands-on workshop demonstrations. The conference also works to develop and maintain a collaborative design community for local design students and industry professionals.
Eduardo J. Padron Campus Communication Conference
The Communication, Arts, and Philosophy department connects various disciplines to produce critical student scholarship. Through different disciplinary approaches, the department was able to empower students to be critical, creative, and competent constructors of scholarly work. Challenging students to create and present critical analyses of contemporary public discourse allows them to navigate the complexity of the world in which we are constantly inundated by messages. The products of this work highlight the scholarly potential of students at the Eduardo J. Padron campus.
Emerging Artists Exhibition
The Emerging Artists Exhibition at the North Campus is an annual showcase that offers the best of what has been created at the Arts & Philosophy department April 2020 - April 2021. Any MDC student enrolled in at least one art studio course (credit or non-credit) during the spring, summer, or fall 2020 terms or the spring 2021 term was invited to submit their work for adjudication.
Excellence Across the Curriculum
The Annual Student Interdisciplinary Symposium provides a forum for students across the disciplines to present about change-making, sustainability and human rights. Students will identify a social issue and demonstrate a deep awareness of the problem and/or propose sustainable solutions with a scholarly poster session, an art exhibit, oral presentation, and/or collaborative student project to their audience. This opportunity requires students to think critically and be involved with academic research, project based learning, and/or the creative process from start to finish over the course of the semester.
GSELS Projects Showcase
Students in GSELS-designated classes share their research projects, artwork, designs and models, and performances pieces, focused on an array of sustainability and Earth Literacy-related topics during the GSELS Projects Showcase.
The Global Sustainability and Earth Literacy Studies (GSELS) Learning Network provides inclusive educational opportunities for the Miami Dade College community to explore global citizenship, ecological sustainability, and civic engagement, through understanding planetary challenges and limits and by developing values, skills, and behaviors that promote prosperity and communities of well-being.
Health Literacy Initiative
Miami Dade College's Health Literacy Program, supported by the Florida Blue Foundation and operated by the Florida Literacy Coalition, is part of the broader Florida Health Literacy Grant Initiative. This statewide initiative aims to address health literacy disparities among adult ESOL learners by providing training, resources, and funding. The Health Literacy Program integrates health education into the curriculum, equipping students with English language and literacy skills necessary to navigate the healthcare system. By participating in this program, students gain access to valuable health knowledge while improving their language proficiency.
Humanities Edge Undergraduate Research Symposium
Student symposiums showcasing Miami Dade College undergraduate research in the Humanities, sponsored by the Humanities Edge Grant.
MAGIC Miami Animation & Gaming International Complex
The Miami Animation and Gaming International Complex produces capstone projects during the second academic year. All students are allowed to pitch an idea for a project, which can be a short film, video game, or immersive simulation. Selection is based on being an original idea, having strong and defined characters, and production feasibility. The selected projects are paired with executives and professionals from animation studios currently partnering with MAGIC as part of the mentorship program.
Nursing Writers of Excellence
In order to demonstrate competency of nursing career knowledge and skills, students in their last semester of the Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) program are assigned a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) paper to craft their own nursing philosophy. The top papers from the Professional Nursing Leadership course are selected by a panel of judges comprised of writing support assistants from Homestead and the Medical Campus.
Pages for all Ages New Authors Books
Pages for all Ages is a literacy-based program founded by Dr. Yanely Webb at Homestead Campus. The program pairs MDC students, who serve as mentors, with migrant children from the South Dade community, to collaborate in the writing of the children's books.

Press Pause: Reflections on the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our lives in unprecedented ways, transforming the way we work, go to school, and connect with our family and friends. These campus-wide contests asked students to document and reflect on the impact of the pandemic through their art and creative writing.
Repository of Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship (RUNS)
MDC Benjamin Leon School of Nursing bachelor’s-level students from the Medical Campus are required to produce written scholarly assignments to demonstrate competency of nursing career knowledge. In the Advanced Nursing Concepts Practicum (NUR4945C) class, students were tasked to craft a process improvement paper which could be implemented at a health care facility or system. The best papers from NUR4945C were selected by their professors and then submitted to a panel of writing support assistants from the Medical Campus, and the top student writers received the Undergraduate Nursing Scholarship Award.
STEM Research Symposium
The dynamic symposium features the original research of MDC students who worked alongside top scientists from MDC, the University of Florida, Nova Southeastern University, the University of Miami, and St. Thomas University, as part of the School’s Summer Research Institute.
These high-quality research projects cover a wide variety of fields, including biology, physics, chemistry, microbiology, engineering, and genetics.
Student Art Exhibition
For the first time in the history of the Kendall campus art department, the student exhibition will be entirely online for the safety of our students, faculty, and staff due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
This year each faculty member has selected their best student work from the past academic year. Artworks were selected by faculty in the disciplines of Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Graphic Design and Photography. These works showcase the hard work and commitment students and faculty have towards their practice. Some of the artworks reflect the issues of the pandemic while other works show strong concept and technical prowess in field. We are proud to present these student works and give recognition to those who continued to work hard through this crisis.
Student Interdisciplinary Symposium
The annual Student Interdisciplinary Symposium first began in 2017. The symposium promotes scholarship and research, and in particular, interdisciplinary collaborations, by featuring poster sessions, round table discussions, oral presentations, and information tables.
Universal Declaration of Human Rights Art Exhibition V
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights Art Exhibition V highlights the work of the Arts and Philosophy students at the North Campus, who were invited to work in groups or individually to create custom artwork representing the various articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The purpose of this exhibition is to educate viewers of their human rights and teach students how to use art, not just as entertainment and decoration, but also as a form of activism and education.
