Carne Viva Dance Theatre

Founded by Queer Cuban American artist Chachi Perez, Carne Viva Dance Theatre is a vibrant and dynamic collective of artivists based in Lenape Land and Miami. United by their commitment to culture as liberation and their bodies as acts of rebellion, they explore their identities through art. The collective creates intimate, erotic, and playful works that honor their shared stories and celebrate their individuality. By blending Afro-Cuban influences, street dance, and modern improvisational practices, Carne Viva cultivates a compelling kaleidoscope of rhythm, movement, and storytelling. Their performances, which incorporate dance, theatre, text, and original sounds, transport audiences to another dimension—awakening their senses and consciousness.

Carne Viva was the recipient of the BIPOC New Work Tracks (2022) for the Cannonball Festival and has been an Artist-in-Residence at Mascher Space Cooperative and MotiVE Brooklyn. The company was also a guest teaching and performing artist at the Artistry In Rhythm Dance Conference at Miami Dade College (2022–2023). Most recently, they have performed their latest work at:

  • Perez Art Museum in Miami, FL
  • The Sandrell Rivers Theatre for Miami Dances! 2024
  • Judson Memorial Church for Movement Research in NYC

They are honored to continue sharing the beauty of their culture with their communities.

Rhythm Recipes

This workshop explores how everyday kitchen items—like pots and pans—can be used as instruments of resistance and protest in Latin American cultures. Participants will learn about “cacerolazo,” the act of banging pots and pans to express dissent, and its significance in social and political movements.

The workshop includes rhythmic exercises, movement, and cantos to help participants physically express resistance. It aims to highlight how music, rhythm, and movement serve as sources of joy, unity, and cultural pride within the Latinx community during challenging times.
