Abstract

Gender role expectations are rooted deep within our culture with works taught in high school like the Odyssey that demonstrate strict gender roles on how men and women should act and impact how students view the world during their influential years of development. Using Critical Literature Pedagogy, students can discuss and analyze the gender role expectations within the Odyssey. To convey the message that traditional gender roles often trap students, I used texture to help show the trauma that gender expectations carry through a person's everyday life. The students’ gazes are fixated on the depictions of men and women and the roles they were told to fulfill historically. They see the dullness in the woman’s eyes as if she has been forced into a life that was not hers but what a man had made for her. My artwork depicts emotion and tells the story based on the women’s perspective.
