A Historical Analysis of The Growing Population of Central American Migrants in the U.S. by Stephanie Rubio

Abstract

As a member of the Central American diaspora in the United States, I created this research paper that explores a series of U.S. interventions taking place from the late 1890s until the early 1990s focusing on Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador with themes such as anti-communist extermination programs, the funding of right-wing dictatorships, and the training of national militaries in order to combat leftist parties. With the purpose of giving an informative background as to why we have such a large minority group of Central Americans in the U.S. as they did not really begin migrating in large caravans until the 1980s. Giving a brief overview of what some of the common outcomes were from U.S. intervention consisted mainly of political corruption, gang violence, and caravans of immigrants seeking to escape Central America. During the process I’ve used various articles, books, documents that pertain to the history and events taken place and previous knowledge from family.
