How is MDC Supporting LGBTQ+ Students by Paola Linares

Abstract

For years, the LGTBQ+ community has been marginalized. From fighting for basic human rights, to fighting for support and access to basic services, the battle for affirmation and inclusion has been an intense one in the past years. This research examines what MDC is doing to support LGTBQ+ students. The research was conducted through the use of a simple survey and a semi- formal interview to a limited sample of Student Life Directors on various campuses, as well as students that self-identified as members of this community. The survey, although limited in nature and sample size, indicated that more needs to be done to support LGTBQ+ students. Based on the responses of some Student Life Directors, MDC is still on the process of augmenting the safe spaces and inclusive and informative events to LGTBQ+ students. It was also found that some students have not yet begun clubs or organizations that might facilitate their support systems on the various campuses. As a result of these findings, it has been determined that developing a brochure/pamphlet would be necessary to further inform LGTBQ+ students of the resources available to them.
