Virtual Arena: How Technology Contributes To Sports Addiction by Andrew Ruby

Abstract

Avid followers of sports can stay up to date on their favorite teams easier than ever thanks to technology. However, as with all things, overuse of a pleasurable thing can have dangerous consequences. Since sports are a worldwide phenomenon, the implications of having so much information at one’s disposal are crucial. Research has shown that the fear of missing out can cause an addiction to searching for new details about a matter. Such an emotional attachment can cause one to become more invested in the subject of their choice, in this case, sports, than in their relationships. As a result of this study, I intend to open the eyes of my audience to how even normalized activities can be classified as addictions and to challenge them to use technology wisely. In order to accomplish this, I created a spoken word poem.
