Abstract

This research project focuses on the specific poetic form of the prose poem. The final project consists of a collection of prose poems developed exploring the theme of exile and immigration through the student’s family experiences. She has conducted research using Holly Iglesias’ critical book Boxing Inside the Box: Women’s prose and her poetry book Sleeping Things to develop a stronger understanding of the prose and explore its qualities. Furthermore, she has researched scholarly essays and documentaries on Cuban History for a deeper understanding of the historical context on the themes of exile. During weekly meetings with her mentor, she gained much insight on how to master the prose poem giving her the ability to revise in reflection of what she learned.
