Abstract

Throughout the last fifty years, there has been an increase in studies related to health promotion, disease prevention, and healing effects of humor in the medical field and public health. These investigative endeavors seek to implement laughter and humor as a secondary form of therapy to improve patients’ outlook on life, reduce negative effects of the hospital environment, and increase the quality of life of people with a terminal illness, among other things. Dr. Michael Lenaghan and Caitlin Richardson, Academic Support Writing Coach, provide support in the form of humorous advice and availability for feedback. Furthermore, we confer weekly, via conference call, to discuss my progress and prospective ideas. Observing the results obtained in previous studies, I have concluded that the use of laughter therapy and humor has a positive impact on the health of patients. Because humor poses little to no risks for patients, future studies should continue. Broader use of humor in medicine can improve the health of patients, their families, and the doctors themselves.
