Abstract
This paper uses Geoff’s Moore’s theory of business ethics to conceptualize and respond to the moral challenges facing businesses posed by the coronavirus. Moore’s approach draws from the virtue ethics of Alasdair MacIntyre, and relies heavily on his institutions-practices schema. According to Moore, the point of a business-qua-practice is to provide goods and services that make people’s lives better, and the point of a corporation-qua-institution is to provide the business with its operational resources. The fundamental moral challenge facing any corporation is to pursue profit for the business’s continued operation without falling into the pursuit of profit for its own sake. The coronavirus can therefore be conceptualized as a moral threat to businesses insofar as it disrupts normal operations and increases the risk of profit being pursued for its own sake.
