Abstract
According to studies published on the official site of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States, the demographics of homeless people has changed over time due to the nature of economic development, changes in human migration as individuals and families move from place to place, and most importantly, changes in the way society perceives and confronts poverty. Human beings exclude human groups and deprive the rights of those who have lost everything. We are stressed, focused on our own problems to the point that we do not have time to think about anything outside ourselves. While this is taking place, people are suffering. Many, feeling completely out of options, experience homelessness. Seniors, veterans, children and families, the mentally impaired, those enduring addiction disorders, and workers who are employed but cannot afford to buy or rent a home due to increasing housing costs. Homelessness has become a growing problem and as a society, we cannot continue to look the other way.
The purpose of this project is to build awareness and inspire individuals to become involved with the issue of homelessness and to advocate for training and apprenticeship programs not just as part of a multidisciplinary process but an interdisciplinary approach to help homeless people who want a second, third, or fourth chance at reconnecting with family and community to obtain the tools to enter the skilled workforce and be free to return to society. This project demonstrates that homelessness is an interdisciplinary problem that requires integrated services across disciplines with teams that share planning and actively coordinate interventions to address the individual needs of homeless persons.
For the homeless, an end to this growing plague is attainable. It is up to us as a community to decide which role we wish to fill. As an advocate, law enforcement, educator, health provider, career counselor, volunteer or contributor, together we can change the course of our human history from supporting systems of inequality and isolation to restoring dignity and hope.
