Understanding Climate Change & Food Insecurity: What Role Do We Play? By Brittney Acosta, Nelson Rubio, & Emanuelle Guillemi

Abstract

Our project explored how natural and constructed environments are connected and how they may embrace or destroy natural environments. Our attention was focused on the global and pressing issue of climate change as well as food security. Through our academic research, we discovered that food security has been threatened in many parts of the world, in part, by the growing problem of climate change. Our community of South Florida has seen a recent increase in food insecurity. We concluded that climate change has negatively impacted food production and increased food waste. We also concluded that greater awareness of these issues and increased civic participation are needed to tackle both. We sought to mitigate some of the negative effects of climate change as well as food insecurity in our community. Additionally, we aimed to educate our college and surrounding community about the need for government action to help reduce climate change.
