What Happens in the Island, Stays in the Island by Yoel Ramon Banobre

Abstract

William Golding stunned audiences, critics, and educators across the country with his masterful piece, Lord of the Flies (1954). The novel was  challenged at Owen, NC high school (1981) for concerns that the novel is “demoralizing inasmuch as it implies that man is little more than an animal. Shortly after, Olney, TX Independent School District (1984) challenged the novel for excessive “violence and bad language" (American Library Association, 2013). Golding serves its readers with a well-structured novel that illustrates complex allegorical representations. However, Lord of the Flies is not yet appropriate for students in a middle school level or below because it demonstrates bullying, the display of natural human evil, and lurid passages of barbaric violence.
