Abstract
In today’s world, technology plays a significant role in people’s lives. It has become a tool that people have been using for decades to support and promote learning. Technology has evolved in different forms, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and watches. They can be found almost anywhere now, such as in homes, schools, and offices. The rapid rate of technological change is an important reason for scientists to investigate its effects on attention, learning, and memory. Questions regarding technology’s potential positive and negative impact on attention and memory for academic learning should be addressed. To answer some of these questions, we are investigating the indirect and direct effects of using technology for academic learning. College students respond to a survey about academic learning and complete an attention and working memory task. The survey results will reveal how college students feel about how technology has impacted their academic performance, particularly the ability to recognize and learn academic content. Additionally, we assessed how engaging videos can increase student attention and memory for academic content by analyzing data from quiz scores of two previous college courses. The data collected will be used to assess the role of technology in working memory and selective attention of college students.
