Blacks in American Cinema: An exploration of the disparities in Black representation in film and television by Temiloluwa Alagbe

Abstract

The research project focuses on the disparities in Black representation in film and TV in the entertainment industry. Specifically, the video narrative chronicles the historical absence of Blacks in leading roles in film. Additionally, it explores how the roles played by Black actors have perpetuated negative stereotypes while examining the evolution of the film and TV industries, highlighting recent advancements in diversity in the executive ranks, in production, and within the writers’ ranks in a still racially evolving Hollywood. The project will also highlight the controversy over hiring Black actors from other countries, including England and Africa, for prominent roles in American films. A timeline tracing Black actors’ roles in American cinema will accompany the video.
