Gender Expectations in Romeo and Juliet by Amanda Anderson

Abstract

Gender expectations permeate every society, affecting its population's views and actions. Not only are these views perpetuated in our day to day lives, but also in the literary canons we are required to learn in our formative years, like Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Many of these classical works demonstrate strict gender roles regarding how men and women should act and function in society. Using Art Pedagogy shows students a new way of interpreting and creating meaningful works that can educate, advocate for, and inspire the minds of others. By teaching Romeo and Juliet through artistic interventions, while providing students a sense of awareness and responsibility for the sociocultural system they live in, students will be positively impacted.
