Abstract
This project will explore the origins of cowboy culture and how American pop culture has erased their historical source material. It will trace the development of cowboy culture in America from Spanish ranching practices and explore the use of the cowboy caricature in media to perpetuate American ideals of expansion, the erasure of minorities from historical narratives, and the villainization of indigenous peoples.
