Wigz: The Musical! by Mychelle Bell

Abstract

The project's culminating product will be a Musical stage play (and more) highlighting and celebrating Black women and our historical relationship with our hair through time. The play consists of a journey of a woman going back to her roots as it is interwoven as part of a larger narrative of cohesive nonfiction storytelling, song, and spoken word (Poetry). In addition, the project includes a “Visual” cover and a preview audible voiceover of the play! There is a lack of representation of Black women and our hair in the mainstream media. Our hair is political. It has been used to control us, and to celebrate us. Whether we choose to wear it naturally or in a wig, our hair is an important part of who we are. When it comes to hair, Black women are often left out of the conversation. We see images of straight-haired white women being praised for their locks, while Black women with natural hair are ridiculed and told that they're "unprofessional." This needs to change!

Wigz will celebrate the beauty and power of Black women's hair through a musical stage play and more! Our project will highlight the importance of our hair throughout history and show that no matter what style we choose, we're still queens. Our project is a celebration of Black women and the incredible journey we have taken with our hair. It speaks to our resilience, strength, and creative expression through the years. It’s time for us to continue this conversation in an honest and celebratory manner. We must acknowledge how detrimental hair discrimination has been to black women as a whole and show that celebrating our natural beauty is not just about staying on trend but about being rooted in our unapologetic empowerment. Let's make it known that Black women are–and always will be–empowered by their crowns. Let's support each other and spread the love for anyone who still questions relevant this issue is today! Spending more time informing and engaging the public in discussions focused on intersectionality, cultural knowledge, and appreciation can help raise awareness of colorism, discrimination, and racism daily. Let's spread more positivity about black female hair permanently so that no girl should ever feel she needs straight hair to fit into some arbitrary beauty ideal.
