TutorTIPs Symposium: What’s Writing Got to Do With Fashion: A Case Study in Creative Interdepartmental Collaboration & Playing With Fire: A Case Study

Part 1: What’s Writing Got to Do With Fashion: A Case Study in Creative Interdepartmental Collaboration
Kimberly Logan-Hynes, Associate Instructor, Learning Resources, West Campus
Patrick Henry, Academic Support Writing Coach, Learning Resources, Wolfson Campus

Wolfson Campus Learning Resources placed an embedded tutor in one of the construction classes at the Fashion Institute. What happened? The tutor was able to reinforce the specialized skills taught by the professor during class time and assisted students with appointments for both sewing and writing help. We will discuss what worked, what didn’t, and how to build on this unique collaboration.

Objectives

  • Raise awareness and promote expansion of Embedded Tutoring in non-traditional courses.

Part 2: Playing With Fire: A Case Study
Michael Allora, Fire Sciences Administrative Coordinator, North Campus
Ariane Tulloch, Academic Support Writing Coach, Learning Resources, North Campus

When Fire Sciences met Learning Resources, they left the realm of the real and entered the realm of the possible. Geographically separated, the two departments seemed to be as far apart collegially as they were physically. Not having collaborated before, their pairing was unexpected. However, this partnership proved fruitful. Join us as they discuss how, through collaboration and innovation, they were able to improve the retention of students in the Firefighter Minimum Standards program.

Objectives

  • Promote interdepartmental collaboration
  • Identify existing systems and challenges
  • Show steps to take when addressing a problem
  • Model best and promising practices
  • Spark creativity
  • Show that solutions can arise from unexpected pairings.
