Red Queens and White Knights: Using Chess in Math Tutoring
Leonardo Salinas, Tutor, North Campus
Arlizia Smith, Associate Instructor, Learning Resources, North Campus

Did you know that chess involves math? Each piece has a different value, and when you capture a piece, you are subtracting from your opponent’s side. Knowing how to play chess can help promote mathematical thinking such as addition and subtraction. Furthermore, chess demands that one uses the same logic that reoccurs in math problems. This presentation illustrates how you can utilize chess to tutor students in math.
